Sarasota Film Festival, "Book Club" by Hope Hartman @ Sarasota Film Festival 2012

It's Sarasota Film Festival time and that means rushing off to a film at 9:45 AM, coming home and rushing off to another at 1:20 PM, coming home and then rushing off to another at 9 PM.  Life has become chaotic and frenzied in the best possible way.

This morning we saw "Book Club", a documentary by Hope Hartman about just that. In this group were 6 women who loyally showed up month after month for 62 years to read books and be with each other. That's right, 62 years- count em'.  Even one of the members herself said "I haven't been committed to anything or anyone else for that long."

They discussed books of course, but the larger value of the group was found in their mutual support, camaraderie and respect for each other while going through most of life's passages together.

Everyone loved the film and the women in it. How couldn't you like a group of 80 to 90 year old women who were frank, intelligent and united?  There wasn't a BS bone in their bodies.  I wasn't the only one wishing that I could have been part of a lifer group like this one.  In fact, one of the nice parts of watching this film was inserting yourself into the book club and imagining how comforting and interesting these women would be.  It was a good wake up call to value our old friends and appreciate those we share a history with before it's too late.

As I walked out of the theater, I kept thinking about the concept that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. That's what this film portrayed so skillfully and these women called to mind for me.  As more and more time passes by, I'm beginning to agree.
